You Are Called: Discovering God’s Purpose for Your Life

You Are Called: Discovering God’s Purpose for Your Life

God created you on purpose, for a purpose, and your calling isn’t limited to what you do for a living.

You Were Made for More

There’s a phrase worth making your own:

“God, if there is more, I want all of it.”

The good news is that there is more. There is more of God to know, and there is more in you than you may realize. You were made for more. That doesn’t necessarily mean you need more stuff. You probably don’t need another truck, another side-by-side, or another thing to fill your garage. The “more” God has for you is much deeper than material things.

It’s more purpose.

More meaning.

More impact.

More of a life that actually matters.

At some point, every person asks the question: Who am I, and why am I here? Maybe you’ve already asked it. Maybe you’re asking it right now. And if you’ve ever felt like you’re simply drifting through life - getting up, going to work, coming home, watching the same shows, doing the same things, going to bed, and repeating it all again - you’re not alone. Years can pass that way.

One year becomes three.

Three becomes five.

Five becomes ten.

And eventually you look up and wonder, What am I doing with my life? God has something better. You are called.

God Created You on Purpose

Genesis 1 describes the earth before God brought His creation into order. It was formless, empty, and dark. Then God created something out of nothing. That same God who created the universe also created you. Psalm 139 gives us a beautiful picture of how personally God created each one of us:

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

You are not an accident.

You are not random.

You are not here by chance.

You were fearfully and wonderfully made.

Before you had a résumé, a career, a title, a degree, or even a name, God knew you. Psalm 139 reminds us that God saw us before we were fully formed and that our days were known to Him. That means your life has purpose because the God who created you has a purpose for you.

You Are Called to Know God

There is an important distinction when we talk about calling. Sometimes when Christians hear the word called, they immediately think about pastors, missionaries, worship leaders, or other people who work in ministry. But God’s calling is much bigger than a job title.

When you put your faith in Jesus, you are called to be His disciple. You are called to know God and make Him known. That calling belongs to every follower of Jesus. Your occupation may be what you do, but it doesn’t define the entirety of who you are.

You may be a plumber. But if you follow Jesus, you’re a saved plumber.

You may be an electrician. You’re not just there to fix the lights. You have the opportunity to introduce people to the One who is the Light of the World.

You may work in a restaurant. You don’t just serve bread. You can point people toward the Bread of Life.

You may drill wells. You don’t just provide water. You can tell people about the One who offers living water that never runs dry.

You may be a teacher.

You may be a coach.

You may be a nurse.

You may be a banker, business owner, landscaper, contractor, farmer, stay-at-home parent, student, or retiree. Whatever you do, you have been placed there for a reason. Your job is not separate from your calling. Your job can become the place where you live out your calling.

God Has Placed You Where You Are for a Reason

One of the most important things we can understand is that God is actively working in His world. He didn’t create the world and then walk away. He is still working. He is still writing history. He is still drawing people to Himself. And in His sovereignty, God chooses to work through His people.

That means the people around you may not be in your life by accident. That coworker may be there for a reason. That employee may be there for a reason. That student sitting in your classroom may be there for a reason. That customer who keeps walking through your doors may be there for a reason. That neighbor you keep running into may be there for a reason. What if the people God has placed around you are part of the reason He has placed you there?

Suddenly, your workplace looks different.

Your classroom looks different.

Your business looks different.

Your neighborhood looks different.

Your everyday life becomes an opportunity for ministry.

You Have a Divine Design

God didn’t just give you a calling. He also uniquely designed you for the purpose He has given you. You have gifts, talents, abilities, interests and experiences. You have things you’re naturally good at and things you’re definitely not good at! All of those things can become part of the way God uses you. And when you become a follower of Jesus, God also gives spiritual gifts that are meant to build up the church and advance His Kingdom. The question isn’t whether you have something to offer. You do. The question is whether you know what God has given you and whether you’re willing to use it. The church is stronger when every person uses what God has entrusted to them. You don’t have to stand on a stage to make an impact. You simply need to be faithful with what God has placed in your hands.

Don’t Let Fear, Doubt, or Comparison Keep You From Your Calling

If God has called you to something, you may experience doubt. In fact, you probably will. God often calls us to things that are bigger than what we believe we can do. That’s because His calling requires us to trust Him, not ourselves. You may look at what God is asking you to do and think:

That’s not me.

I can’t do that.

I’m not qualified.

Someone else could do it better.

Who am I to do that?

But your limitations don’t limit God. Don’t speak limits over God’s creation by limiting what He can do through you. You don’t have to be the most talented person. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You simply have to be willing to walk faithfully in what God has entrusted to you.

God’s Plans Are Bigger Than You Think

Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most familiar verses in the Bible:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord.

Those words are powerful because they remind us that God has plans for His people. But don’t stop at verse 11.

Jeremiah 29:12-13 continues:

“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

God’s plan isn’t simply about giving you a comfortable future. His plan begins with relationship.

Know Him.

Seek Him.

Talk to Him.

Listen for His voice.

Follow Him.

When you know God, you begin to understand who you are. And when you understand who you are, you can begin to understand what He has called you to do.

God’s Phone Number Is Jeremiah 33:3

Here’s a number worth remembering: Jeremiah 33:3. God says:

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

That’s God’s invitation.

Call Me.

Not text Me.

Call Me.

God wants a relationship with you. He wants you to talk to Him, seek Him, listen to Him, and trust Him. And when you seek Him with your whole heart, He will reveal things you don’t yet know. There may be things God has placed inside of you that you haven’t discovered yet. There may be gifts you haven’t recognized. There may be opportunities you haven’t seen. There may be people He has placed in your path for a reason. There may be a calling you’ve been running from because you’re afraid. But God already knows. And He is inviting you to discover it with Him.

You Are Called

Before you had a career, God knew you.

Before you had a title, God knew you.

Before you knew what you wanted to do with your life, God knew you.

Before you were even born, He was at work.

You were knit together in your mother’s womb.

You were fearfully and wonderfully made.

And if you have placed your faith in Jesus, you have been called to something greater than simply earning a paycheck and making it through the week. You are called to know God and make Him known. So don’t just go to work. Go with purpose. Don’t just teach a class. Invest in lives. Don’t just coach a team. Speak life into the next generation. Don’t just run a business. Build relationships. Don’t just fix the light. Point people toward the Light. Don’t just serve the meal. Look for the opportunity to serve people with the love of Jesus. Your calling doesn’t necessarily require a new job. It may simply require a new perspective. God has placed you where you are on purpose, for a purpose.

So ask yourself:

What has God placed inside of me?

Where has God placed me?

Who has God placed around me?

And perhaps most importantly:

What is God calling me to do with it?

You are called.

There is more.

And the God who created you is inviting you to discover it.
